The Secret to an Unforgettable Wedding? Timing.

By: J.Patterson

Thoughtful timing ensures guests enjoy themselves while you savor every moment—from a relaxed morning to golden-hour photos and an effortlessly magical evening.

The Secret to an Unforgettable Wedding? Timing.

When it comes to planning your wedding, it’s easy to get caught up in the details—what time’s breakfast, what will Aunt Jean’s kid eat, or if glassware will be replenished—but here’s the thing: that stuff doesn’t matter nearly as much as the schedule. In fact, it doesn’t matter at all. A well-planned event is all about timing.

After seeing countless weddings, one thing stands out: couples who plan early ceremonies and jam-packed schedules often end up feeling rushed. Some even try to schedule their ceremony before their venue rental begins, thinking they can make it work—but here’s the reality: most venues, including ours, only allow access starting at the official rental time. In the end, many couples say, “We should have booked another night!”—and when they could extend, they did. But more often, it’s too late to adjust.

Perhaps there’s a pressure to “make the most” of every minute. Sometimes, it’s a mindset shift—thinking of the wedding as a one-day event instead of embracing the full multi-day celebration you’ve planned, like with destination weddings and venues like ours.

The old wedding mindset of keeping guests entertained non-stop and worrying that downtime equals boredom couldn’t be farther from the truth. Yet, it often leads to overstuffing the schedule, just to prove it was all worth it. To whom, I don’t know.

But here’s the thing: your wedding should feel effortless and fabulously fun, and the only people you need to impress are yourselves. Take the time to enjoy it—whether it’s waking up to a leisurely breakfast, soaking in the excitement of getting ready, capturing breathtaking cinematic photos (hello golden hour), or savoring every spontaneous toast and deeply romantic dance as the festivities unfold. Thoughtful timing is what makes it all possible without a hitch.

Let’s dive into why slowing down is the secret to creating a wedding day that feels as incredible as it looks.

Why the Right Timing Matters

For the record—this day goes by faster than you think. We know firsthand—having been married ourselves and been part of more weddings than we can count (think triple digits). So, let’s spell it out: You don’t want to feel rushed or miss out on the little moments that make the whole experience magical just because your schedule is needlessly early or overplanned.

Even the most laid-back couples need time to breathe. Hair and makeup alone can take a solid three hours (just for the bride!), and that’s before you even factor in breakfast (which, depending on what you’ve planned, you might actually want to sit down and enjoy), getting ready with your favorite people, and those must-have pre-ceremony photos. Give yourself the room to soak it all in—it makes all the difference.

And if you’ve hired a photographer, make sure you’re working with them, not against them. A decent photographer can cost anywhere from €1,500 to €3,000 (or more), depending on the services you’ve selected. Wedding photographer planning should factor in ample time for staging shots and getting the lighting just right.

Stunning Photos Take Time

Authentic, swoon-worthy photos don’t just happen—they take time, talent, and the right light (which, honestly, isn’t between 12:00 and 14:00 when it’s harshest). If your photographer is booked for 8 hours, remember they’re not shooting the whole time. They need time to arrive, unload their gear, test lighting, and get familiar with the venue (and probably grab a coffee to stay sharp). That’s easily 30–60 minutes gone right there.

Before guests fill up the spaces, they’ll usually take shots of the details—ceremony setup, tables, florals, decor—which can take another hour or more depending on your design. Then it’s on to getting-ready shots, first looks, and all the little styled moments (skip the dress-hanging shot, it looks better with you in it). All of that easily fills an hour or two, and we haven’t even reached the ceremony yet (let alone cocktail hour, dinner, or dancing). Plus, at some point, they’ll need a quick bite, time to check images, and adjust settings.

Pro Tip: Skip the awkward “must-have” shots with every single guest or family member. Instead, let your photographer capture those real, unposed moments—laughter, hugs, and the little stolen exchanges with your besties and family. You'll get the authentic, emotive shots you actually want, without all the stiff, forced posing and worrying about accommodating every single guest (especially the ones you were "obliged" to host, like that distant relative or a plus one).

Since the ceremony is the anchor, timing it right is key. After that, things move fast, so while guests enjoy cocktail hour, take a moment to sneak away for couple portraits when the light’s at its best.

Golden Hour: The Best Time for Wedding Photos

One of the best times for an outdoor wedding ceremony is during golden hour—the hour just before sunset. It’s when the light gets that dreamy, warm glow that makes everything look incredible. Your skin looks amazing, your photos look straight out of a magazine, and the whole vibe is just... magical. Plus, the way that light hits the glistening warm white walls of this castle? It’s pure storybook.

Golden hour also brings a sense of calm and intimacy, adding an extra layer of allure to your ceremony and post-nuptial congratulations. In late spring through mid-summer, golden hour usually falls between 6:30 and 8:00 PM. As the days get shorter in late summer and early autumn, it’s more like 5:30 to 7:00 PM. Either way, having your ceremony during this window (late afternoon to early evening) gives you the best light and keeps everyone comfortable (no sweaty Betty business) since the midday heat has passed.

Don’t Forget About the Flow

It’s not just about the photos—timing for your wedding ceremony sets the tone for the entire celebration. The difference between a polished, effortlessly flowing wedding and one that feels a bit chaotic often comes down to two things: clear communication and thoughtful timing. Nailing these elements means your day unfolds naturally, with space to soak in every moment without feeling rushed.

A 5:30 PM ceremony in September, for example, wraps up around 6:00 PM, giving you just enough time to take those golden-hour photos while your guests enjoy cocktails. We’ve found that a 90- to 105-minute cocktail hour is pretty much perfect—an hour can feel rushed, and two hours isn’t necessary. Pro tip: Always build in a 15-minute buffer to keep things stress-free—105 minutes is the new 90.

Then, as the sun sets and the vibe shifts from laid-back to celebratory, you’re ready to move into dinner. Some clever couples even opt to start dinner at 8:00 PM, taking full advantage of those gorgeous early evening shots—especially in early summer when the light’s just right at 7:30 PM and the long days stretch well into the night. Why rush when the evening’s on your side?

Why You Should Avoid Early Ceremonies

We advise against early ceremonies (around 12:00, 1:00 PM, and 2:00 PM). This timing can make it challenging for vendors like florists, hair stylists, and makeup artists, who often need 6-8 hours to complete their work—this can impact your photographer’s timing as well. Plus, the lighting is usually the harshest (aka worst) during this window.

A later ceremony allows your vendors to arrive after you’re guests enjoy breakfast, giving everyone a more relaxed start to the day—and it sets you up for capturing calm, beautiful moments in gorgeous natural lighting.

And, if you’re worried about a late evening celebration because "grandpa will be hungry" or “your mother-in-law won’t understand” (after all, her wedding ceremony was at 11:00 AM), here’s the thing: It’s your wedding. Do what you want—they’ll survive. But if you must go earlier, just don’t make it before 3:00 PM ;)
